Newyork (The COW News Digital) US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Sunday that America’s trade agreements with the European Union, China, and other partners remain in force despite the Supreme Court ruling that struck down parts of President Donald Trump’s tariff program.

Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Greer emphasized that Washington is in “active conversations” with its partners to ensure trade deals continue to be honored. “We expect to stand by them. We expect our partners to stand by them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Christine Lagarde expressed uncertainty about the implications of the court decision. She urged clarification to ensure proposals comply with both constitutional and legal requirements, aiming to avoid future challenges.

Greer also addressed a planned April meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing it as a session “not to fight about trade” but to maintain stability. The discussion will focus on ensuring China upholds its commitments, including purchases of American agricultural goods, Boeings, and rare earth materials.

Following the Supreme Court ruling on Friday, which found that Trump exceeded his authority under a 1977 economic emergency powers act, the president announced new global tariffs. Initially set at 10 percent, the duty was raised to 15 percent on Saturday, taking effect Tuesday for 150 days, with certain product exemptions.

Greer clarified that tariffs imposed outside the authority struck down by the court remain in effect and noted that the 15 percent rate represents the maximum allowed under existing law.

Responding to criticism and public disapproval of the tariffs, Greer said Trump has long campaigned on protecting American industry and “delivers on his promises,” reinforcing the administration’s commitment to its trade policies.
