As tensions continue to rise between Pakistan and India, China has reaffirmed its firm support for Pakistan’s position, calling for peace and stability in South Asia.
Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Thursday to discuss the evolving regional situation. During the meeting, PM Sharif extended warm greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, and thanked Beijing for its unwavering support in these challenging times.
Highlighting recent developments, PM Sharif warned that India’s aggressive actions risk diverting Pakistan’s focus from its counterterrorism operations against banned outfits such as the TTP and BLA, which continue to operate from Afghan territory.
He also condemned India’s alleged weaponization of water resources, calling it “deeply regrettable” and a clear violation of the Indus Waters Treaty. “No party has the right to unilaterally deviate from the treaty,” the prime minister stated, reiterating that a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains the only path toward lasting peace in South Asia.
PM Sharif emphasized that Pakistan has consistently condemned terrorism in all forms, noting the country’s heavy sacrifices, including over 90,000 lives lost in the fight against terror.
Ambassador Jiang expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s clarity on regional issues and reaffirmed Beijing’s support for Pakistan’s stance. He assured that China would continue to stand by Pakistan in its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability.
PM Sharif concluded the meeting by thanking the Chinese government for endorsing Pakistan’s proposal for an international investigation into the recent Pahalgam incident, calling it a testament to the deep-rooted strategic partnership between the two nations.
