The Anti-Terrorism Court in Gujranwala has sentenced Naveed, the prime suspect in the shooting incident during PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s rally in Wazirabad, to two consecutive life sentences.
The court delivered its verdict on the case related to the attack on Imran Khan during the long march on November 3, 2022. Naveed Ahmed was sentenced to life imprisonment twice—once for the murder of Moazam, who died in the attack, and again for committing terrorism.
The court also handed Naveed a prison sentence ranging from three to five years for injuring four individuals in the attack and imposed a fine of 500,000 rupees.
Meanwhile, the court acquitted other suspects in the case, including Tayyab Butt and Waqas, due to lack of sufficient evidence.
During the trial, the court summoned Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, to appear in person eight times and also instructed him to testify via video link from Adiala Jail. However, the former prime minister failed to record his testimony as a witness.
The attack, which occurred during PTI’s long march, resulted in the death of one individual and left Imran Khan along with 13 others injured. The police arrested the assailant at the scene.
Imran Khan had accused Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of orchestrating the attack.
