Zhob( The COW News Digital)A mild earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck Zhob and its surrounding areas on Friday, causing panic among residents who rushed out of their homes in fear.

According to the Seismological Center, the quake’s depth was recorded at 150 kilometers, with its epicenter located approximately 106 kilometers south of Zhob. Although tremors were felt across the district, early reports confirmed that no casualties or significant property damage had been recorded.

Eyewitnesses described moments of fear and confusion as the ground shook. Many residents recited prayers and rushed outdoors in search of safety, fearing aftershocks or structural damage to buildings. “We felt a sudden jolt, and everyone in the house quickly ran outside,” said one resident. “Thankfully, it was short, but it scared us a lot.”

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Balochistan, a province situated on multiple seismic fault lines, making it highly vulnerable to tremors of varying intensities. Authorities reminded citizens to remain cautious and prepared for emergencies, particularly given the history of destructive earthquakes in the region.

While Friday’s quake in Zhob did not result in loss of life or property, it once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger disaster preparedness measures and resilient infrastructure in vulnerable districts of Pakistan. Seismologists warn that deeper quakes, though less damaging on the surface, are reminders of the active seismic activity beneath the region.

The tremor came shortly after another incident in Indonesia, where a more powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake left several buildings collapsed and dozens injured, underscoring the global threat posed by natural disasters.

Local authorities in Zhob confirmed they are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to assess any delayed reports of damage or injuries. Emergency response teams have been placed on alert, though no assistance has so far been required.

Residents, meanwhile, expressed concerns over the lack of awareness and preparedness programs in the district. “Every time there’s an earthquake, people panic because we don’t have proper safety drills or guidelines,” said a teacher from Zhob.

Experts emphasize that public education on disaster response, along with investment in earthquake-resistant infrastructure, remains critical to minimizing risks in the future.
