In an open letter published on Friday, two dozen former Democratic lawmakers called on President Joe Biden to permit other candidates to compete for the party’s presidential nomination. This move comes as a significant blow to Biden, who is facing concerns about his fitness for office after a tumultuous debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump.
The letter, signed by 24 former congressional Democrats, urged Biden to release his pledged delegates at the Democratic National Convention, allowing other candidates to compete for the nomination. The signees believe that this would “best serve the nation” and lead to “excitement and optimism” within the party.
Despite Biden’s assertions that he plans to stay in the race, 19 currently serving Democratic lawmakers have also called for him to withdraw due to concerns about his health and mental acuity. The letter expressed concerns not only about the presidency but also the potential loss of congressional seats to Republicans.
The signees emphasized that while Biden’s “integrity and vision are intact,” his “energy and stamina” are diminished, making it essential to consider alternative candidates to protect Democratic interests and prevent total GOP control of the federal government.
