Islamabad, The Supreme Court has strongly reprimanded provincial governments for failing to incorporate climate change measures into their annual budgets. During a recent hearing, the court highlighted the urgent need for allocating funds to address environmental challenges, including rising temperatures, floods, and water scarcity.
The bench criticized provinces for neglecting their responsibilities under national climate policies and urged them to prioritize sustainable development in financial planning. The court stressed that ignoring climate-related issues in budgetary allocations could exacerbate environmental degradation and threaten public health and safety.
Legal experts say the Supreme Court’s remarks underscore the growing importance of climate action at all levels of governance. Authorities have been instructed to submit detailed plans demonstrating how climate change mitigation and adaptation measures will be integrated into provincial budgets moving forward.
The court has warned that failure to comply may lead to further judicial scrutiny and directives to ensure accountability.
