Renowned French newspaper Le Monde has published a scathing report highlighting the Indian Air Force’s shortcomings, following recent air operations near the Pakistan border. The report reveals that at least three Indian fighter jets, including the advanced French-made Rafale, were downed during the encounter — a major blow to India’s military prestige.
According to Le Monde, Indian security officials confirmed the losses to French news agencies. The article describes the incident as a “humiliating setback” for the Indian Air Force and claims the events exposed serious technical and operational weaknesses within its ranks.
India had procured 36 Rafale jets from France in 2016 for nearly €8 billion to bolster its air power. However, a December 2024 report from India’s own Auditor General had already raised red flags over the Air Force’s preparedness, pilot training, and aircraft maintenance.
The French publication further noted that Pakistan’s air force, with its years of combat experience gained through counterterrorism operations, is better equipped in aerial warfare. Pakistan reportedly fields a combination of modern Chinese and French-made aircraft capable of countering Indian forces.
In a controversial revelation, Le Monde alleged that the Indian government compelled domestic media outlets to take down reports of the fighter jet losses, signaling an attempt to manage public perception and suppress criticism.
Defense analysts cited by the French daily argue that the Indian Air Force’s inability to protect its assets in high-stakes situations not only reflects poor strategic execution but also exposes deeper institutional vulnerabilities. The report concludes that international media scrutiny has further undermined the credibility of the Modi administration and its handling of military affairs.
