In a bid to defuse escalating tensions between Pakistan and India following the Pahalgam incident, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in Islamabad on an official visit.
According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, Araghchi was received at Islamabad International Airport by senior officials from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iranian ambassador.
The Iranian Foreign Minister is expected to hold key meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. Discussions will cover bilateral relations, regional developments, and global issues of mutual concern.
Iran’s diplomatic initiative follows heightened hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors after a deadly shooting in Indian-occupied Kashmir’s Pahalgam district that killed 26 people. India blamed Pakistan without completing a formal investigation, leading to a spike in regional tensions.
Tehran has offered to mediate between Pakistan and India, with the aim of preventing further deterioration of the situation. Iranian authorities confirmed that after his visit to Pakistan, Araghchi will travel to New Delhi later this week to continue the dialogue process.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the purpose of these visits is to promote peace and reduce hostility in South Asia, signaling Tehran’s active role as a regional stabilizer.
