In a powerful display of solidarity with the people of Gaza, Pakistan witnessed a nationwide shutter-down strike today, bringing business activity to a complete standstill across the country.
According to Express News, the strike — called by Jamaat-e-Islami and supported by various trader associations — resulted in the closure of markets from Karachi to Peshawar, with major roads seeing minimal traffic and daily life largely halted.
Commercial centers, including major markets and small shops, remained shut in key areas of Karachi. Protesters gathered at several locations, chanting slogans against Israel and in support of Palestinians. Traffic authorities issued alternate routes to manage disruptions around protest sites.
Historic markets in Peshawar such as Qissa Khwani Bazaar, Chowk Yadgar, and Ashraf Road were completely closed. Large malls and shopping centers also observed the shutdown in support of Palestinians.
In the hill town of Murree, the usually bustling Mall Road and Cantt Market fell silent, reflecting the countrywide observance. In Rawalpindi, Raja Bazaar, Murree Road, and Saddar remained deserted due to the strike.
Solidarity extended beyond traders, as the medical community also joined in. Many pharmacies remained shut in protest, with the Druggists and Chemists Association actively participating in the strike.
In Balochistan, cities including Quetta, Mastung, Khuzdar, Kalat, and Pishin reported a complete halt in commercial activity. Similar scenes were witnessed across small and major cities in Punjab, where citizens demonstrated their support for Palestine.
Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said the strike is a message that Pakistani people reject Israeli aggression and U.S. support for it. “This is an expression of love for the oppressed and a voice raised against injustice,” he added.
