Abuja( The COW News Digital)At least 60 people have died and several others remain missing following a boat accident in Niger State, northern Nigeria, local authorities confirmed. The tragedy occurred when a passenger boat, carrying over 100 people, capsized after colliding with a tree trunk on a river near the Malale district village of Tungan Sule, on its way to Doga.

The incident has triggered a major rescue operation as local authorities work tirelessly to locate survivors and recover bodies. Some passengers were rescued alive, but many remain unaccounted for. Officials warn that the final toll may rise as search efforts continue.

Boat accidents during the rainy season are unfortunately common in Nigeria, particularly in northern and central regions. Overcrowding, poor vessel maintenance, and lack of safety measures, including life jackets, often contribute to these recurring tragedies. Experts note that many boats operate far beyond their capacity, increasing the risk of capsizing in rough river conditions.

“The boat was carrying far more passengers than it was designed for,” a local official said. “Combined with poor river conditions, it was a disaster waiting to happen.”

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has witnessed numerous similar incidents in recent years, highlighting the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement of maritime safety standards. Despite repeated warnings, many communities continue to rely on overcrowded and poorly maintained boats as a primary means of transportation, especially in remote areas.

Local rescue teams, supported by government agencies, are conducting continuous searches along the river. Helicopters, boats, and divers have been deployed to locate missing passengers. Community members have also joined the rescue operations, emphasizing the collective effort to save lives in the wake of the disaster.

Authorities are urging families and local residents to remain cautious during the rainy season and comply with safety measures when using water transport. They also call for national attention on the implementation of safety protocols, including mandatory life jackets and vessel inspections, to prevent such incidents in the future.

The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by communities dependent on river transport and underscores the need for stronger safety measures and public awareness campaigns across Nigeria.
