A Pakistani court has rejected an appeal by former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to suspend their conviction for violating Islamic law in their 2018 marriage. The couple will remain in jail, serving a seven-year sentence handed down in February. The conviction was based on a complaint by Bibi\’s former husband, Khawar Maneka, who alleged that she did not observe the required three-month waiting period before remarrying.
Khan and Bibi have filed multiple appeals, with another hearing set for July 2 to annul the February conviction. Their party, PTI, has condemned the decision and warned of a new political crisis if Khan is not released. The ruling party, PMLN, has accused Khan of attempting to create chaos in the country. Khan has been acquitted or granted bail in 18 other cases, including a recent overturning of a 14-year sentence for illegal sale of state gifts.
