Islamabad (The COW News Digital) Pakistan has decided to keep its border with Afghanistan closed indefinitely, citing security concerns as a top priority. The move comes amid rising tensions following warnings from Afghan authorities urging their traders to reduce dependence on Pakistan and engage in commerce with other countries.
Officials told the Express Tribune that the decision sends a clear message to Kabul: until concrete action is taken against the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other terrorist groups, border trade and other activities will remain suspended. Authorities emphasized that the closure is not a routine administrative measure but represents a strategic shift in Pakistan’s policy toward the region.
A senior government official stated, “Security first, trade later. This is Islamabad’s new stance.” Officials also informed the Afghan Taliban leadership that no further negotiations will take place until robust measures are implemented against terrorist networks operating across the border.

The border closures have now been in effect for over a month, causing thousands of trucks and shipping containers to be stranded on both sides. Currently, border crossings remain open only for humanitarian purposes, including the movement of Afghan refugees and stranded individuals returning to their home countries.
Another senior official highlighted, “For us, the safety of our people is more important than trade and the economy, and we will not compromise on it.” This approach underscores Pakistan’s focus on national security in light of ongoing threats from militant groups operating in the region.
