Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Munir Akram, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the escalating situation in South Asia, focusing on efforts to de-escalate tensions between Pakistan and India following the Pahalgam incident.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the latest developments in the region and explored avenues for promoting peace and stability. Ambassador Akram reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to regional peace and its support for a diplomatic resolution to rising hostilities.
The engagement comes amid heightened international concern over the potential fallout of the recent attack in Pahalgam, which has significantly strained bilateral ties between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Ambassador Akram is scheduled to hold a major press conference later today in New York, set for 8:00 PM Pakistan Standard Time, where he is expected to elaborate on Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach and proposals for a peaceful path forward.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the U.S. administration has emphasized the need for responsible conduct from both Pakistan and India. He noted that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has already communicated this position to leaders in both countries.
“There is a growing expectation here in Washington that both nations will act with restraint to prevent any further escalation,” Ambassador Sheikh said.
The recent diplomatic efforts reflect Pakistan’s broader initiative to internationalize the issue and seek multilateral support for conflict de-escalation in South Asia.
