In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss growing tensions in South Asia, rejecting India’s accusations against Pakistan over the recent Pahalgam incident.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Shehbaz strongly dismissed India’s claims as baseless and politically motivated, reiterating that Pakistan had no connection to the Pahalgam attack and has consistently advocated for a transparent and impartial investigation.
The Prime Minister emphasized Pakistan’s sacrifices in the global fight against terrorism, underscoring the country’s firm stance against terrorism in all its forms. He also voiced concern over India’s attempts to link Pakistan with terrorism as a pretext to divert attention from its own actions in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
During the call, PM Shehbaz also condemned India’s state-sponsored violence in Kashmir and called out New Delhi’s efforts to criminalize the Kashmiri freedom struggle. He expressed serious alarm over India’s unilateral threats regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, calling such actions unacceptable and dangerous, as the treaty represents a lifeline for 240 million people in Pakistan.
The Prime Minister warned that any aggression or adventurism by India would be met with a firm and full defense of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
PM Shehbaz urged the UN Secretary-General to counsel India to act responsibly and with restraint. He also called for the United Nations to play a proactive role in resolving the long-standing Kashmir dispute in accordance with UNSC resolutions, identifying it as the core issue behind regional instability.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to international peace and security, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan remains a responsible member of the global community and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council dedicated to upholding global peace.
In response, Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts for regional peace and stability, stressing that the world cannot afford escalation in South Asia at this critical time.
