Russia has issued a formal statement urging Pakistan and India to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue, as tensions continue to escalate between the two nuclear-armed neighbors following the Pahalgam attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The statement comes after the killing of 26 Indian tourists in Pahalgam, which has triggered a diplomatic standoff and a series of retaliatory measures from both Islamabad and New Delhi, including India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Russia, Khalid Jameel, held a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister to discuss the deteriorating situation in South Asia.
The Russian ministry confirmed that the two sides exchanged views on regional security, particularly in the aftermath of the Kashmir attack. Russia reiterated its position that all outstanding issues between Pakistan and India must be settled through diplomatic means and in accordance with international law.
“Russia encourages both sides to act with responsibility and avoid actions that could lead to further destabilization of the region,” the statement read.
As a longstanding ally to both nations, Moscow’s call for de-escalation reflects growing international concern over the risk of conflict in the region, particularly given the strategic and nuclear capabilities of both states.
