Khartoum (Tghe COW News Digital) Sudan’s rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced a unilateral ceasefire amid the ongoing civil conflict in the country. The announcement, made via a video statement by the RSF commander, also emphasized an end to hostilities as part of the ceasefire.

Global media reports indicate that the RSF is calling for a halt to fighting and a reduction in civilian casualties. However, Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) head General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has yet to respond to the announcement, leaving uncertainty over whether the ceasefire will be observed by both sides.

Sudan has been engulfed in clashes between government forces and rebel militias since 2023. Last month, the RSF launched an assault on the city of Al-Fashir, capturing the entire city and reportedly killing around 2,000 people during the operation. According to United Nations estimates, over 13,000 people have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict across Sudan.

The unilateral ceasefire comes amid growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis. Civilians continue to face displacement, food shortages, and attacks on residential areas, making an immediate end to hostilities critical to prevent further suffering.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced plans to begin efforts to end the Sudanese conflict, signaling increasing international pressure for a resolution to the violence. The United Nations and other international organizations have also called for both parties to honor a ceasefire and allow unrestricted humanitarian access to affected regions.

Analysts note that while the RSF’s ceasefire declaration is a positive step, its unilateral nature raises questions about enforceability and the potential for renewed clashes if the Sudanese Armed Forces do not reciprocate. The success of any ceasefire will largely depend on cooperation between both factions and oversight by international mediators.

The conflict in Sudan has had devastating effects on civilians, infrastructure, and regional stability. A sustained ceasefire and subsequent negotiations are essential to lay the groundwork for a long-term peace settlement and reconstruction efforts.

As the situation develops, global observers are closely monitoring the responses of both the RSF and SAF, hoping that the ceasefire will mark the beginning of a de-escalation in one of Africa’s most severe ongoing conflicts.
