Former U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled a letter left for him by outgoing President Joe Biden in the Oval Office, continuing a longstanding tradition of departing presidents leaving messages for their successors.
According to U.S. media reports, the envelope was marked with the number “47,” symbolizing Trump’s position as the 47th president of the United States.
The letter began with the words “Dear President Trump” and extended good wishes to Trump and his family for the next four years. Biden wrote, “As I depart this sacred office, I extend my best wishes to you and your family for the years ahead.”
In the letter, Biden reflected on the global significance of the presidency, writing, “The American people and people around the world look to this office in moments of history’s inevitable storms.”
He continued with a hopeful prayer for the nation: “My prayer is that the years ahead will bring prosperity, peace, and dignity for our nation. May God guide you as He has guided our country since its founding, blessing and leading us along the way.”
The letter was dated January 20, 2025, the day Biden left office and Trump was sworn in.
Commenting on the letter, Trump described it as “a nice and inspiring message,” adding, “Enjoy it and do a great job.”
This gesture reflects a tradition dating back to 1989, where outgoing U.S. presidents leave handwritten notes for their successors, symbolizing a peaceful transfer of power.
