Washington(The COW News Digital) U.S. President Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for averting a potential war between Pakistan and India, stating that his threat of imposing a 350% trade tariff played a key role in preventing escalation. Speaking at the U.S.-Saudi Business Forum, Trump said the two nuclear-armed neighbors were on the brink of conflict, and he intervened to de-escalate tensions.
“I was informed that Pakistan and India were very close to an atomic confrontation,” Trump said. “I told them that if they did not step back, I would impose tariffs, and trade with the United States would be severely affected.”
According to Trump, he faced objections to his threat, but he insisted that decisive action was necessary to prevent a nuclear catastrophe. “I am not going to allow nuclear weapons to be used, killing millions of people, with nuclear fallout reaching Los Angeles,” he said.

Trump further explained that he offered an alternative: if both countries refrained from war, they could negotiate a beneficial trade deal with the U.S. Following this approach, the Indian Prime Minister reportedly called Trump to confirm that India would avoid military escalation.
Similarly, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif reportedly contacted Trump to express gratitude, acknowledging that the U.S. president’s intervention had saved millions of lives. Trump emphasized that his action was intended to prevent human and environmental devastation, highlighting the high stakes of nuclear confrontations.
This is not the first time Trump has discussed preventing a Pakistan-India conflict. He has previously mentioned halting numerous potential wars worldwide, citing the South Asian standoff as one example of his foreign policy achievements.
Experts note that while Trump’s statements reinforce his narrative of assertive diplomacy, verifying the exact influence of U.S. trade threats on South Asian military decisions remains complex. Nonetheless, the president’s comments underline the strategic role the U.S. often plays in mediating tensions between nuclear-capable nations.
Trump’s remarks at the Saudi forum were framed as part of his broader agenda to highlight American influence in maintaining global peace and stability. He described his intervention as a preventive measure that prioritized lives over trade and diplomatic protocols.
The U.S. administration has historically engaged with both India and Pakistan to manage conflicts, but Trump’s repeated personal claims have attracted attention for their emphasis on unilateral influence and high-stakes diplomacy.
