United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has extended an offer of mediation between Pakistan and India in light of escalating tensions between the two countries.
In a media briefing at the UN headquarters in New York, Guterres stated that the current level of tension between India and Pakistan is at its peak compared to recent years. He cautioned India against taking military action against Pakistan, emphasizing the risks of a conflict that could spiral out of control.
“I urge both governments to exercise restraint. Any military confrontation must be avoided at all costs, as it could escalate beyond control,” Guterres remarked, calling for caution and highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Guterres expressed his appreciation for the contributions both countries have made to the United Nations, particularly in peacekeeping efforts. He expressed regret, however, at the increasing strain in bilateral relations.
He also condemned the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and extended his condolences to the victims’ families. “Targeting civilians is unacceptable, and those responsible must be brought to justice through credible and legal means,” he added.
The UN Secretary-General reiterated his commitment to peace, offering the United Nations’ assistance to both governments in reducing tensions, promoting diplomacy, and fostering a renewed commitment to peace. He stressed that military solutions are not the answer and encouraged both nations to step back and pursue diplomatic channels.
