Karachi is increasingly being recognised for improvements in its healthcare facilities, with several major institutions now offering advanced services that benefit residents and patients from across Sindh. While the city has recently faced criticism in global liveability rankings, local health capacity has seen notable development, particularly in specialised treatment and service delivery.
Leading public health institutions in Karachi, such as the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), National Institute of Child Health (NICH), and the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), have undergone significant expansions and upgrades over recent years. The combined bed capacity of these institutions has nearly doubled, and all are now equipped with modern medical equipment, including CT scanners, MRI machines, and advanced cardiac care units. These enhancements have boosted patient visits and broadened access to specialized treatments in areas like oncology and cardiology.
In addition, community‑focused facilities such as the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) continue to expand services, adding dialysis and lithotripsy units to support more patients with state‑of‑the‑art care.
Federal and provincial authorities have also moved to upgrade local dispensaries into modern health and preventive care centres, emphasising quality care at the neighbourhood level.
Experts say these developments indicate that, despite ongoing pressures on the health system, Karachi’s healthcare infrastructure is becoming more capable — offering better treatment options and improving access for many residents.
