World Press Freedom Day, organized under the auspices of the United Nations, will be observed today, May 3.
The primary aim of the day is to raise awareness about the fundamental principles of journalism, highlight the challenges faced by journalists and media organizations, and shed light on the threats to their lives, including intimidation, harassment, and professional difficulties.
Various programs will be organized across the country in observance of the day. In his message, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized that Pakistan’s constitution guarantees freedom of expression and press freedom. He acknowledged the critical role of the media in promoting dialogue, addressing social, economic, and environmental issues, exposing corruption, and raising the voices of marginalized communities.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, paid tribute to the sacrifices made by media workers worldwide, including those in Pakistan, in their quest to deliver the truth. He also reaffirmed that Pakistan’s constitution guarantees freedom of expression and emphasized that media should not be used for spreading lies, fake news, propaganda, or advancing foreign agendas or political interests.
