Belarus Unveils Laser Weapon System to Counter Drones

3 Min Read

Belarus (The COW News Digital)Belarus has introduced a new laser-based weapon system designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to strengthen its air defense capabilities against drone threats.

The system was unveiled by a Belarusian company during the World Defense Show 2026, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The defense exhibition serves as a global platform for showcasing advanced military technologies and security solutions.

According to international media reports, the newly introduced laser weapon is specifically engineered to disable drones by targeting and destroying their optical surveillance and targeting systems. By neutralizing the drone’s sensors, the system renders the aircraft inoperable without necessarily causing large-scale explosions or debris, making it potentially suitable for use in populated or sensitive areas.

Developers say the laser weapon can be deployed to protect both military and civilian installations, particularly in urban environments where traditional air defense systems may pose higher risks. The system is reportedly effective against various types of drones, including small commercial UAVs and more advanced reconnaissance platforms.

Technical specifications released at the exhibition indicate that the weapon has an effective operational range between 50 and 500 meters. Its laser output power ranges from 0.75 to 2.0 kilowatts, allowing it to disrupt or damage drone components within seconds of engagement. The system weighs between 4 and 4.5 kilograms, suggesting it is relatively lightweight and potentially portable.

The rise of drone warfare and the increasing use of UAVs for surveillance, reconnaissance, and attacks have prompted many countries to invest in counter-drone technologies. Laser-based systems are considered an emerging solution due to their precision, low per-shot cost, and ability to engage targets at the speed of light.

While Belarus has not disclosed detailed deployment plans, the unveiling of the system highlights the growing global demand for compact and efficient anti-drone defenses. Analysts note that laser weapons are becoming an integral part of modern layered air defense strategies.

The introduction of this technology at a major international defense event underscores Belarus’s intent to position itself as a player in the evolving market for counter-drone solutions.
