Kevin Pietersen Blames IPL for Early Career End

World ( The cow news digital ) Former England cricket captain Kevin Pietersen has made a striking revelation, claiming that his international career was cut short due to controversies surrounding his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In a recent interview with Indian YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, Pietersen alleged that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) created intense pressure around his IPL involvement during the early years of the tournament, which ultimately affected his career trajectory.

He stated that during the initial phase of the IPL in 2008, England centrally contracted players were not permitted to participate in the league. However, in 2009, he was granted limited permission to play, during which he joined the franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru. According to Pietersen, this decision led to strained relations with the English cricket board.

Pietersen claimed that negative media campaigns were directed against him, which he described as a “witch-hunt,” and alleged that the ECB used media outlets to put pressure on him. He suggested that these circumstances significantly contributed to the early end of his Test career at the age of 33.

Reflecting on his international career, Pietersen said he played 104 Test matches and believed he could have gone on to play between 150 and 160 Tests, scoring far more runs than he ultimately achieved. He expressed regret over what he described as compromises made during that period.

Despite the controversies, Pietersen emphasized that he is now living a peaceful life and views his career differently in hindsight. He also suggested that his struggles helped pave the way for future English cricketers, who now enjoy greater freedom to participate in global franchise leagues like the IPL.

He mentioned that current players, including Jos Buttler, have acknowledged the path paved by earlier players, allowing them to balance international and franchise cricket more freely.

Pietersen remains one of England’s most talented batters, scoring 8,181 Test runs, including 23 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He has also been associated with IPL teams such as Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad, and was later appointed mentor for Delhi Capitals in 2025.

His comments have once again reignited debate over the balance between international cricket commitments and franchise leagues.
