Saudia(The COW News Digital)A rare astronomical event will take place tonight as the Moon appears directly above the Kaaba in Mecca, offering Muslims around the world a unique opportunity to accurately determine the direction of Qibla.
According to the Jeddah Astronomical Society, the phenomenon will occur on Saturday, February 28, 2026. At precisely 10:24:40pm local time in Saudi Arabia, the Moon will cross the local meridian line and reach an altitude of nearly 90 degrees, placing it directly above the Kaaba at its highest point in the sky.
Astronomers describe this alignment as a “lunar transit” or zenith passage. It occurs when the Moon’s declination matches the latitude of a specific location — in this case, the coordinates of the Kaaba. During this brief window, observers anywhere in the world can face the Moon to determine the precise direction of Qibla.

Experts say the Moon will be approximately 374,000 kilometers away from Earth at the time of the alignment. It will be illuminated at about 91 percent, appearing nearly full and bright in the night sky. The strong illumination will make it clearly visible to the naked eye in dark areas, while telescopes and binoculars will offer an even sharper view.
Astronomical specialists note that such alignments are significant for both scientific observation and religious practice. While the Sun also aligns directly above the Kaaba on specific dates each year, lunar alignments provide an alternative reference point, particularly during nighttime hours.
The event is expected to attract attention from astronomy enthusiasts and worshippers alike. Observers are advised to ensure clear skies and minimal light pollution for the best viewing experience.
Officials from the Jeddah Astronomical Society emphasized that the phenomenon is entirely natural and poses no risk. Instead, it offers a remarkable reminder of the precise celestial mechanics governing the Earth-Moon system.
As the Moon reaches its zenith above Islam’s holiest site, millions around the globe will have the opportunity to witness a striking intersection of astronomy and faith.
