Mayor Zahran Mamdani described each fatality as a tragedy and emphasized that city authorities are working tirelessly to protect vulnerable populations.
Speaking to the media, Mayor Mamdani confirmed that the extreme cold has forced emergency measures to be implemented across the city. Shelters have expanded their capacity, and registration requirements have been relaxed to ensure that more residents can find safe refuge from the harsh weather.
Over 93 individuals have already been safely relocated to emergency shelters, while 18 others were moved forcibly to protect their safety. Mobile warming units have also been increased to 20 vehicles to provide accessible heat for those in need. Thousands of sanitation workers and city employees have been deployed in extended shifts to maintain public safety and services during the freeze.
The city’s health and emergency teams are actively encouraging residents to check on neighbors, particularly the elderly and those living alone, to prevent further loss of life. Mayor Mamdani warned that the impact of the frigid temperatures may continue for several more days and urged citizens to remain cautious and limit outdoor activities.
Local authorities have also coordinated with nonprofit organizations and community centers to provide additional resources, including hot meals, blankets, and temporary shelter for the homeless. Hospitals and emergency services have reported an uptick in cold-related health emergencies, including hypothermia and frostbite.
Despite the severe weather, city officials are committed to maintaining essential services and ensuring that no resident is left without support. “Our primary goal is to keep everyone safe until the temperatures rise,” Mayor Mamdani said.
