Palestine(The COW News Digital)Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has reaffirmed his commitment to establishing an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, emphasizing that such a state is both necessary and unavoidable. The announcement was reported by international media on Thursday.

Speaking from Ramallah, Abbas stressed that the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes will be ensured in accordance with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. He described the ongoing struggle in Gaza and the West Bank as a defense against some of the worst acts of ethnic cleansing and mass violence in recent Palestinian history.

Abbas criticized Israel for what he described as consistent violations of international law, the global legal framework, and various ceasefire agreements. “The Palestinian people will neither surrender their weapons nor leave their homeland,” he stated, underscoring the resolve to resist annexation plans or forced displacement.

The Palestinian leader called for national unity, urging citizens to remain united under the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which he reaffirmed as the legitimate and sole representative of the Palestinian people. He emphasized that the establishment of a Palestinian state requires collective effort and cohesion across all political and social groups.

Abbas further clarified that a viable Palestinian state cannot exist without Gaza, nor can it consist solely of the Gaza Strip. He said the region will be reintegrated under national legal jurisdiction and rebuilt as a central part of the Palestinian national plan. The reconstruction of Gaza, he added, is essential to achieving long-term stability and sovereignty.

The speech comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, as both Gaza and the West Bank face military and political challenges. Abbas’s statements signal a continued commitment to international diplomacy, while maintaining a firm stance against unilateral actions that threaten Palestinian territorial integrity.

Analysts say Abbas’s reaffirmation highlights the Palestinian leadership’s focus on achieving a two-state solution under internationally recognized guidelines. It also reflects efforts to rally domestic and international support for Palestinian self-determination and sovereignty.

The remarks underscore the continuing Palestinian demand for justice, legal recognition, and national unity, while signaling resistance to external pressures that may compromise their political objectives. President Abbas concluded by calling on Palestinians to remain steadfast, united, and committed to the national cause, as the path toward statehood continues to face significant challenges.
