MOSCOW (The COW News Digital) Russia has formally demanded that the United States immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced. Moscow reaffirmed its “unwavering support” for Venezuela’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and national interests, emphasizing the continuation of close and comprehensive cooperation between the two nations.

In an official statement, the Russian ministry urged U.S. authorities to free the legally elected Venezuelan president and his spouse without delay. The statement comes in the wake of U.S. military actions on January 3 targeting civilian and military sites in Caracas, which Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto described as open acts of aggression. Following the attacks, a state of emergency was declared in Venezuela.

According to U.S. officials, President Donald Trump confirmed that Maduro and his wife were detained and transferred abroad. On January 5, both were presented in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, facing charges related to drug trafficking. Maduro and his wife have denied all allegations, asserting that the charges are politically motivated.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Moscow will continue to back Venezuela in defending its territorial integrity and political autonomy. Analysts say the statement highlights the growing tensions between Russia and the U.S. over influence in Latin America, particularly concerning Venezuela’s leadership.

Russia’s call for Maduro’s release underscores its strategic support for the Venezuelan government and signals potential diplomatic friction if Washington does not comply. The ministry reiterated its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and providing comprehensive political and economic support to Caracas.

Observers note that the situation could further complicate U.S.-Russia relations, particularly as both countries remain engaged in global geopolitical disputes. International human rights and diplomatic organizations have been closely monitoring the case, highlighting concerns about due process and sovereignty.

As the standoff continues, the international community is watching developments closely, aware that the outcome could have significant repercussions for regional stability in Latin America and broader U.S.-Russia relations.
