Washington D.C.(The COW News Digital) U.S. intelligence officials have revealed that approximately 2,000 Afghan nationals currently residing in the United States have direct or potential ties to terrorist organizations. The disclosure was made by Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, during an interview with American media outlets.

Gabbard sharply criticized the Biden administration for the slow vetting process of Afghan arrivals under Operation Allies Welcome, which saw nearly 18,000 Afghan nationals enter the United States. According to her, the screening of these individuals during their arrival was inadequate, raising serious national security concerns.

“The review process for Afghan arrivals under Operation Allies Welcome was insufficient, and we are now conducting thorough investigations of each individual to ensure that no threats are overlooked,” Gabbard stated. She emphasized that all relevant agencies are actively involved in this process to monitor potential security risks.

Of the 18,000 Afghan nationals who entered the country under the program, approximately 2,000 have been identified as having either direct or possible connections to extremist groups, including ISIS and other terrorist organizations. Gabbard noted that these groups continue to plan attacks on U.S. soil and are actively seeking individuals who could assist in carrying out such operations.

“This is a serious threat that demands our full attention. We are taking every precaution to monitor and mitigate risks posed by individuals with extremist ties,” she added.

Gabbard further highlighted that the number of individuals entering the U.S. through unofficial channels has increased in recent years, compounding the security challenges. She warned that the ongoing presence of potential extremist operatives on American soil requires coordinated efforts across multiple government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other intelligence bodies.

The revelation has sparked renewed debate over the vetting procedures for Afghan refugees and the balance between humanitarian obligations and national security. Experts note that the findings underscore the importance of rigorous screening processes to prevent extremist infiltration while continuing to provide refuge to those fleeing conflict zones.

As investigations continue, U.S. authorities are expected to implement stricter oversight measures and enhanced monitoring of individuals with suspected terrorist affiliations, aiming to safeguard national security while managing the humanitarian responsibilities of refugee resettlement.
