Islamabad ( The COW News Digital)Pakistan’s star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has been appointed captain of the national One Day International (ODI) team ahead of the upcoming home series against South Africa. The three-match series will take place at Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad, from November 4 to November 8, 2025.

According to sources, the decision to hand over the ODI leadership to Shaheen was finalized during a high-level meeting held in Islamabad. The meeting was attended by head coach Mike Hesson, High Performance Director Aaqib Javed, and members of the national selection committee.

Afridi, 25, will be leading the ODI side for the first time, marking a significant step in his already illustrious career. Known for his fierce pace, swinging deliveries, and passion on the field, Shaheen has been one of Pakistan’s most consistent performers across formats. His appointment is seen as part of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) broader strategy to build a young, dynamic leadership group as the team transitions after the recent changes in management and squad composition.

Team insiders say the decision reflects Shaheen’s growing influence and maturity as a leader. “He commands respect in the dressing room and brings energy, aggression, and tactical awareness — qualities essential for leading the ODI side,” one PCB official remarked.

The series against South Africa will be crucial for Pakistan as it marks their preparation for the 2026 ICC Champions Trophy. The selectors are expected to announce the final squad later this week, with emphasis on balancing experience and emerging talent.

Shaheen, who has already captained Pakistan in T20 internationals, expressed confidence about the upcoming challenge. “It’s an honor to lead my country in ODIs,” he said in a brief statement shared by the PCB. “We will play positive, fearless cricket and aim to make our fans proud.”

The upcoming series will also mark the return of international cricket to Faisalabad after several years, with all matches expected to draw capacity crowds. South Africa’s team is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan in early November.

Cricket analysts believe Afridi’s leadership in ODIs will be closely watched as Pakistan looks to rebuild consistency in the 50-over format under his aggressive yet composed captaincy style.
