NIGERIA (The COW News Digital) Nigerian authorities have successfully secured the release of 100 schoolchildren abducted from Niger State over a month ago, local media reported on Sunday. The incident is being described as one of the worst mass kidnappings in recent Nigerian history.

The attack took place on November 21, when armed assailants stormed St. Mary’s Catholic Boarding School in Papire, abducting 303 children and 12 staff members. During the chaos, which involved gunfire and panic, 50 children managed to escape on their own. The whereabouts of the remaining students and staff had remained uncertain for several weeks, sparking widespread concern and international attention.

While local media confirmed the release of the 100 children, authorities have not immediately disclosed further details about the operation or the current condition of the children. Federal officials in Niger State, as well as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), stated that they had not yet received official communication from the central government regarding the rescue.

Daniel Atori, a spokesperson for CAN, said, “We have not yet received formal confirmation from the government, but we hope the reports are accurate. We remain hopeful for the swift recovery of the remaining children.”

The mass abduction highlights ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions, where schools and communities have frequently been targeted by armed groups. Government and security forces have faced mounting pressure to enhance protection measures and respond promptly to such incidents.

The successful rescue of these 100 children is being hailed as a major achievement by authorities, reflecting the ongoing efforts to combat kidnappings and restore safety in vulnerable areas. Analysts emphasize, however, that continued vigilance and community cooperation are essential to prevent future abductions.

As the nation welcomes the news of the children’s release, attention remains focused on locating the remaining students and ensuring their safe return. The incident underscores the persistent threat posed by armed groups to education and the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms across affected regions.
