Sudan(The COW News Digital)Six Bangladeshi members of a United Nations peacekeeping mission were killed on Saturday after a drone strike hit a UN base in Sudan’s Kordofan region, marking one of the deadliest recent attacks on international peacekeepers in the conflict-torn country.

According to a statement issued by the United Nations mission, the drone targeted a peacekeeping base operating in Kordofan, an area that has witnessed intense fighting amid Sudan’s prolonged civil war. In addition to the six fatalities, at least six other peacekeepers were wounded in the attack. Four of the injured personnel are reported to be in critical condition. All the victims are nationals of Bangladesh.

The United Nations strongly condemned the assault, describing it as a serious violation of international law. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and extended condolences to the families of the deceased peacekeepers and to the government and people of Bangladesh. In his statement, Guterres said attacks against UN personnel are unjustifiable and may constitute war crimes under international humanitarian law.

Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, also denounced the incident, calling it a “cowardly attack” on personnel deployed to protect civilians and support peace efforts. He urged the United Nations to ensure that all necessary emergency medical care and logistical support is provided to the injured Bangladeshi peacekeepers and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Sudanese Armed Forces blamed the attack on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group that has been locked in a violent struggle with the national army for more than two years. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has plunged Sudan into a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing millions and leaving large parts of the country devastated. Thousands of civilians have been killed, while basic services and governance structures have collapsed in several regions.

The RSF has not issued any immediate response to the allegations. Previous attacks on civilian and international targets have frequently been followed by mutual accusations from both sides, complicating efforts to establish accountability.

The latest incident underscores the growing risks faced by UN peacekeepers operating in Sudan, where shifting frontlines, the use of drones, and the breakdown of law and order have made security conditions increasingly volatile. Despite these dangers, UN officials reiterated their commitment to continue supporting peace, stability, and humanitarian assistance in Sudan, while calling on all parties to the conflict to respect international law and ensure the safety of UN personnel.
