The incident occurred in the department of Antioquia as the bus was traveling from the Caribbean coastal city of Tolú to Medellín. Governor Andrés Julián confirmed the details in a statement posted on social media platform X, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of young lives and calling the incident one of the most painful tragedies to hit the region in recent months.
According to officials, the bus was transporting students from an Antioquian high school who were returning from a school trip. The students had reportedly traveled to the coast to celebrate their graduation, and the return journey ended in disaster when the vehicle veered off the road and fell into a deep ravine. The cause of the accident has not yet been officially determined, though authorities have launched an investigation to establish whether mechanical failure, driver error, or road conditions played a role.
Emergency services, including police, firefighters, and medical teams, rushed to the scene shortly after the crash was reported. Rescue operations continued for several hours as responders worked to recover victims and assist the injured in difficult terrain. The wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, where doctors said some remain in serious condition.
Governor Julián described the tragedy as a devastating blow to families and the wider community, particularly as it occurred during the holiday season. “This is an extremely painful moment for Antioquia. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their children,” he said, adding that the provincial government would provide all possible support to those affected.
Local authorities have also announced that counseling and psychological support services will be offered to survivors and grieving families. Flags were lowered in several schools and public buildings as a mark of mourning.
