Gaza City(The COW News Digital)Residents of Gaza are facing extreme winter hardships, with harsh cold and heavy rains worsening the already dire humanitarian situation. The Ministry of Health has reported the death of another newborn due to freezing temperatures, highlighting the urgent need for shelter, fuel, and basic protective resources. Children and the elderly are among the most vulnerable, with limited access to warmth and safety.

Families displaced by Israeli military strikes are forced to live in tents that often flood during heavy rainfall. UNICEF has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating conditions, warning that children are living in “extremely dangerous” environments. Jonathan Cricks, UNICEF’s Communication Chief in Palestine, told Al Jazeera that children have only one or two sets of clothing, which are frequently soaked, making it nearly impossible to keep them dry. The lack of adequate shelter and heating materials further increases the risk of illness among young children.

According to reports, an eight-month-old girl in Gaza recently succumbed to the severe cold, emphasizing the lethal consequences of insufficient humanitarian support. UNICEF and other humanitarian organizations have urged immediate action to provide winter supplies, including blankets, warm clothing, and temporary shelters, to prevent further loss of life.

Amnesty International has also criticized the conditions, noting that the recent fatalities cannot be attributed solely to poor weather. The organization highlighted that the lack of access to adequate housing, relief, and repair materials, exacerbated by restrictions on aid, is a critical factor contributing to these deaths.

In Shati refugee camp, one of the areas most affected by the recent storms, the roof of a house damaged by Israeli bombardment collapsed due to the severe cold and heavy rainfall. Six people, including two children, were trapped under the debris. Fortunately, rescue teams intervened promptly and successfully saved all the trapped individuals, demonstrating the urgent need for continuous humanitarian support.

The situation underscores the compounded challenges faced by Gaza’s residents, who contend not only with the destruction caused by ongoing conflict but also with life-threatening weather conditions. International organizations continue to call for immediate relief efforts to provide shelter, warmth, and essential aid, especially for children and vulnerable populations. Without swift action, winter in Gaza will continue to claim lives, particularly among infants and the elderly, exacerbating the already grave humanitarian crisis.
