Washington(The COW News Digital)US President Donald Trump has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “extremely serious” about ending the war in Ukraine, signaling renewed momentum in diplomatic efforts to bring the prolonged conflict to a close.
Speaking to reporters in Florida, President Trump revealed that he held a 75-minute telephone conversation with President Putin ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump said the detailed discussion left him convinced that Moscow is prepared to move toward ending the war.
“I believe President Putin is very serious about bringing this conflict to an end,” Trump said, adding that peace negotiations have entered their final stages. According to the US president, talks are progressing rapidly, with key issues now being addressed through direct and indirect diplomatic channels.
Trump emphasized that both Russia and Ukraine are showing willingness to conclude the conflict, which has had significant political, economic, and humanitarian consequences for the region. He said Washington is actively engaged in facilitating dialogue between the two sides and will continue to play a central role in pushing negotiations forward.
The US president also confirmed that after concluding his meeting with President Zelensky, he plans to speak with President Putin again to further narrow differences and assess the next steps in the peace process. Trump described his recent engagements as part of an intensive diplomatic push aimed at achieving a sustainable and lasting settlement.
Referring to his upcoming talks with the Ukrainian leader, Trump said Kyiv remains an important stakeholder in shaping any final agreement. “Both sides want the war to end,” he noted, stressing that compromise and realism would be essential for peace to take hold.
Trump recalled that he had previously met President Zelensky in October, during which they discussed a proposed peace framework. At the time, Trump said there was no fixed deadline for reaching an agreement but argued that a successful deal could bring major economic benefits to Ukraine, including reconstruction assistance and long-term stability.
Ukrainian officials have publicly stated that they are prepared to move forward with peace initiatives backed by international guarantees, while Russia has repeatedly said it is open to negotiations under certain conditions. Analysts say Trump’s remarks suggest increased confidence in bridging gaps between Moscow and Kyiv, though significant challenges remain.
The Russia-Ukraine war has reshaped global geopolitics, disrupted energy markets, and caused widespread human suffering. While past diplomatic efforts have struggled to produce lasting results, Trump’s latest comments have raised cautious optimism that a breakthrough may be possible.
As talks continue, the international community will be watching closely to see whether the renewed diplomatic engagement can finally deliver an end to one of Europe’s most devastating conflicts in recent history.
