Washington(The COW News Digital)US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Republican lawmakers, cautioning that failure to win the 2026 midterm elections could expose him to renewed impeachment efforts by Democrats. Addressing Republican members of the House of Representatives in Washington, Trump stressed that party unity would be critical to safeguarding his presidency and advancing his policy agenda.
According to Reuters, Trump told lawmakers that the upcoming midterms would be a decisive test for his administration. He said Democrats were likely to search for grounds to impeach him if Republicans lost control of Congress. “You have to win these elections,” Trump said, adding that a defeat would almost certainly lead to another impeachment battle.
The president urged Republican legislators to remain united on key issues, including economic policy, healthcare, and electoral reforms. He called on them to clearly communicate their achievements and priorities to voters who are increasingly concerned about inflation, rising living costs, and economic uncertainty.

The US midterm elections, scheduled for November this year, will see all seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate contested. The results are expected to have a direct impact on Trump’s ability to pass legislation, approve budgets, and push forward his domestic and foreign policy initiatives.
While expressing confidence in a strong Republican performance, Trump also acknowledged the historical trend that often works against the party of a sitting president. He noted that incumbent administrations frequently lose seats in Congress during midterm elections, a pattern he described as difficult to understand. “They say when you win the presidency, you lose the midterms,” Trump remarked, questioning the logic behind voter behavior.
So far, Republicans in the House have largely backed Trump, granting his administration broad authority on spending and other matters. However, recent developments suggest emerging divisions within the party, with some lawmakers beginning to assert more independent positions on key legislative issues.
This week, the House is expected to vote on an attempt to override a presidential veto issued by Trump last month. The veto blocked the cancellation of water projects in Colorado and Utah, though it remains unclear whether opponents will secure the two-thirds majority required to overturn it.
Trump previously faced impeachment twice between 2017 and 2021, when the House, then controlled by Democrats, brought charges related to alleged abuse of power involving Ukraine and his actions ahead of the January 6, 2021 Capitol unrest. On both occasions, the Republican-led Senate acquitted him.
As the midterm campaign intensifies, Trump’s warning underscores the high political stakes for both his party and his presidency.
