Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has emphasized the urgent need for population growth in Turkey, warning that a continued decline in birth rates could lead to a serious demographic crisis in the future.
Speaking at an event in Istanbul attended by artists and young people, Erdogan urged citizens to play an active role in reversing the declining population trend. “To build strong families, it is essential to have at least three children,” he said, noting that he himself is a grandfather to nine grandchildren.
“I always tell couples to have at least three children because it is necessary to create strong and resilient families,” Erdogan added.

Citing statistics from the Turkish Statistical Institute, the president highlighted that Turkey’s birth rate dropped to 1.48 in 2024, a figure he described as alarming. The president expressed concern over segments of society, including some within his close circle, who oppose population growth. “We must increase our numbers. This is not optional; it is crucial for the country’s future,” he said.
