The fire erupted in the trauma care intensive care unit (ICU) of SCB Medical College and Hospital, one of the largest government medical facilities in the region. The incident occurred early in the morning, between approximately 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., when several critically ill patients were receiving treatment in the ICU.
According to Indian media reports, the blaze spread rapidly within the unit, causing panic among patients and hospital staff. Emergency services were immediately alerted, and multiple fire brigade vehicles were dispatched to the scene to contain the flames and begin rescue operations.
Officials said that doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff members acted quickly to evacuate patients from the affected ward despite the dangerous conditions. Mohan Charan Majhi, Chief Minister of Odisha, confirmed that a total of 23 patients were transferred to other wards within the hospital to ensure their safety. However, the tragic incident resulted in multiple fatalities.
According to the chief minister, seven patients died while being transferred from the ICU to safer locations during the emergency. Three additional patients later succumbed to their injuries after being shifted to other wards.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest that an electrical fault or equipment malfunction may have triggered the blaze, though officials say the final cause will be confirmed after a detailed inquiry.
