National ( The cow news digital ) Opposition leader in the National Assembly, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, has issued a strong warning to the government, stating that Parliament will not be allowed to function if meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan are not restored and his medical treatment is not ensured within a week.
Speaking during a parliamentary session in Islamabad, Achakzai accused the government of undermining democratic norms and said that political tensions are pushing the system toward confrontation. He argued that the public mandate in the February elections had been distorted, claiming that the winning party was turned into a minority through political engineering.
He questioned the legitimacy of the current parliamentary setup, remarking that in many parts of the world, parliaments are not “bought and sold,” but suggesting that the present assembly, in his view, had emerged through questionable processes. Despite this, he added, the opposition had still attempted to keep the system functioning.
However, he warned that continued restrictions on Imran Khan’s access to medical care and family or political meetings would force the opposition to take a more aggressive stance. He stated that if the situation does not improve within a week, the opposition would effectively paralyze parliamentary proceedings.
Raising concerns over governance and civil liberties, Achakzai criticized the treatment of political detainees and questioned why the PTI founder was not being transferred to a hospital for proper treatment. He also called for dialogue among major political stakeholders, including ruling and opposition leaders, to reach consensus on minimum national issues.
He further claimed that unrest and instability were growing in several regions, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, alleging that the use of force and drone operations were worsening the situation. According to him, such policies were deepening public resentment rather than resolving underlying grievances.
The opposition leader also warned against a proposed constitutional amendment, describing it as potentially harmful to democratic institutions. He urged political leaders across party lines to come together to prevent further deterioration of the political system.
Concluding his remarks, Achakzai said that if the government fails to improve the political environment and address opposition concerns, it could trigger severe political consequences, including nationwide agitation and parliamentary deadlock.
