World ( The cow news digital ) Chairman of the Rehman Malik Foundation, Ali Rehman Malik, has called for stronger international cooperation on water security, emphasizing that shared water resources must be protected and should never be used as a means of political pressure.
In a statement issued from Rehman Malik House, Islamabad, Malik expressed concern over increasing challenges to regional water stability and highlighted the importance of water as a fundamental resource for human survival, food security, public health, economic development, and social well-being.
He said climate change, population growth, and rising demand have placed unprecedented pressure on shared water systems around the world. According to him, responsible management, cooperation among nations, and respect for international agreements are essential to addressing growing water-related challenges.
Ali Rehman Malik stressed that agreements governing transboundary water resources must be implemented in their true spirit. He warned that attempts to weaken or ignore established treaty obligations could contribute to regional instability, threaten the livelihoods of millions, and undermine confidence in international legal frameworks designed to peacefully resolve disputes.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s position, Malik said the country remains committed to resolving water-related matters through dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law. He also emphasized Pakistan’s right to the fair and lawful use of shared water resources under existing agreements.
“Water is a source of life, not a tool of coercion. It should unite communities, support development and sustain future generations, never become a means of political pressure against ordinary people whose lives depend upon it,” Malik stated.
He urged all parties involved in shared water disputes to exercise restraint, fulfill their legal responsibilities, and engage in constructive dialogue. He also called upon the international community to support sustainable water governance and peaceful cooperation for the management of shared river systems.
Malik further noted that protecting shared water resources is both a legal duty and a humanitarian responsibility. He said lasting peace and regional stability depend on mutual trust, cooperation, and adherence to agreements that safeguard the interests of all stakeholders.
