World ( The cow news digital ) Devastating flash floods triggered by heavy torrential rains have wreaked havoc across northeastern Afghanistan, leaving at least 20 people dead, more than 80 injured, and over 100 missing, local authorities reported.
The worst-hit area is Nuristan province, which borders Pakistan. Flooding overwhelmed several districts, including the provincial capital of Parun, where swollen rivers breached their banks and swept away vital infrastructure.
Widespread Destruction in Nuristan
Emergency response teams working alongside the Afghan National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have recovered 20 bodies from the mud and debris so far. Rescue operations remain ongoing to locate the more than 100 individuals who were swept away by powerful torrents.
“The riverbank markets in Parun have been completely washed away, leaving behind nothing but thick mud and giant boulders,” officials confirmed, highlighting the scale of destruction.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, the surging floodwaters completely destroyed local hotels, dozens of shops, and residential properties, cutting off key routes and severely hampering search efforts.
Authority Directives and Weather Warning
The NDMA has issued an urgent weather advisory warning of continued heavy rainfall, severe weather, and potential flash flooding across multiple provinces over the coming days. Authorities have strongly urged residents living near riverbanks, low-lying zones, and flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately and move to safer ground.
