DAMASCUS (The COW News Digital) United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Syria on Saturday for an official visit, marking the first time a sitting UN chief has visited the country since 2009.
The historic visit represents a significant diplomatic milestone following recent political transitions and the establishment of a new government in Damascus. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani received Guterres and his delegation upon their arrival at Damascus International Airport.
During his trip, the UN chief is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with President Ahmed al-Sharaa, senior government officials, and civil society representatives. Discussions will focus on Syria’s political landscape, the ongoing humanitarian situation, post-war reconstruction, and potential frameworks for UN support.
UN officials emphasized that Guterres intends to highlight the necessity of international cooperation to support Syria’s transition toward peace, stability, and an inclusive political process following years of conflict. Additionally, the Secretary-General is expected to inspect UN peacekeeping operations stationed in the Golan Heights.
The official visit comes as Syria seeks to restore diplomatic ties with the global community after years of civil war, widespread humanitarian challenges, and diplomatic isolation.
