ISLAMABAD — Defense Minister Khawaja Asif reacted strongly to the Supreme Court’s directive to transfer Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to a hospital, stating that PTI’s celebrations expose their desperation to release their leader from prison through any available route.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the defense minister asserted that PTI’s pursuit of relief has reached new heights following what he termed extraordinary judicial concession granted to one of the party’s founders. He argued that the enthusiasm displayed by party supporters demonstrates a singular focus on securing Khan’s exit from incarceration under the guise of medical grounds.
Highlighting political contradictions, Asif noted that the PTI founder previously advocated for harsher prison conditions for opposing political leaders during his tenure in office. He remarked that presenting Khan as an invincible leader while his party actively petitions for his transfer from prison to a medical facility represents a notable shift in the party’s narrative.
The defense minister added that PTI leadership must address these narrative inconsistencies before celebrating judicial outcomes.
The comments follow a Supreme Court order directing authorities to transfer Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital under tight security until the next hearing. The apex court further instructed the formation of a medical board to oversee his treatment and mandated that public order surrounding the medical facility must be strictly maintained throughout his stay.
