RAWALPINDI — Heavy overnight torrential rains inundated several low-lying areas and underpasses across Rawalpindi and Islamabad, prompt authorities to enforce a rain emergency and deploy emergency response teams.
The relentless rainfall led to severe urban flooding, submerged roadways, and waterlogging in residential neighborhoods, including G-6 and Chhatta Bakhtawar, where rainwater inundated homes. At Katarian, the water level in Nullah Lai surged to 19 feet, prompting immediate flood alerts for adjacent communities as Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) personnel and heavy machinery were deployed to clear drainage points.
According to meteorological data, Saidpur received the highest rainfall in the twin cities at 85 mm, followed by Golra at 75 mm, Shamsabad at 65 mm, Pirwadhai at 64 mm, Goalmandi at 62 mm, and Bokra at 50 mm. The Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast continued heavy rainfall across parts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir.
Downstream along the Indus River, authorities reported medium-level flooding at Kalabagh with an inflow of 396,000 cusecs, while low-level flooding was recorded at Tarbela Dam, Chashma Barrage, Taunsa, Guddu, and Sukkur Barrages. The Flood Forecasting Division confirmed that flow levels in other major rivers remain normal.
