LOHORE (The COW News Digital) Pakistan’s troubles have deepened following their Test defeat against England, with the national side facing a major points deduction in the ICC World Test Championship due to a slow over-rate violation.
According to an ICC announcement, Pakistan have been fined 50 percent of their match fees for failing to maintain the required over rate during the Edgbaston Test against England.
The disciplinary action has also resulted in the deduction of 11 World Test Championship points from Pakistan’s tally. Following the penalty, Pakistan are left with just five points in the current World Test Championship standings.
The deduction has further damaged Pakistan’s position in the competition, with the national team now occupying the bottom spot of the World Test Championship table.
Pakistan were found to have bowled 11 overs short of the required rate after allowances for time lost during the match were taken into consideration.
Under ICC regulations, teams are fined five percent of their match fee for every over they fail to complete within the prescribed time. The penalty can therefore increase significantly when a team falls substantially behind the required rate.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam accepted the charge and agreed to the proposed sanction for the slow over-rate offence. As a result, no formal hearing was required to determine the disciplinary action.
The charges were brought by the match officials, including on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahuddeen Paleker and fourth umpire Russell Warren.
The latest penalty adds to the pressure on Pakistan after their defeat to England. Apart from the immediate impact of the loss, the points deduction has made their path in the World Test Championship considerably more difficult.
