PESHAWAR (The COW News Digital) Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief and opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has warned that Pakistan could face serious consequences if political leaders fail to fulfil their responsibilities, accusing certain elements of pushing the country towards destruction.

Speaking to the media outside the Peshawar High Court, Achakzai alleged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) mandate had been taken away in the 2024 general elections and that the electoral rights of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been disregarded.

In strongly worded remarks, he said the country was being pushed towards ruin. However, he clarified that the opposition had no personal enmity with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari or any other political party.

Achakzai said the electoral mandate of approximately 40 million people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been ridiculed. He stressed that his argument was not about whether PTI founder Imran Khan was good or bad, but about what he described as the party’s victory in the 2024 elections.

He maintained that the public’s electoral choices must be respected regardless of political differences. According to Achakzai, the controversy surrounding the election results had raised serious questions about democratic representation and the protection of voters’ rights.

The opposition leader argued that political disagreements should not become a reason to disregard the choices made by citizens at the ballot box.

Achakzai alleged that various institutions, including the judiciary, had joined forces to deprive PTI of its electoral mandate. He described the alleged actions as unjust and claimed that different tactics had been used to prevent the party from retaining the representation it had secured through the electoral process.

He also raised concerns over the allocation of reserved seats for women, alleging that seats intended for PTI had been taken away and distributed among other political parties.

According to Achakzai, these developments contradicted democratic principles and undermined the public mandate. His statements reflected the opposition’s objections to the handling of election results and the subsequent allocation of reserved seats.

The allegations were made during his interaction with reporters outside the high court. They represent Achakzai’s position on the disputed electoral process.

Achakzai’s remarks came amid continuing political tensions and legal challenges concerning PTI’s representation and the political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He urged political leaders to recognise their responsibilities and warned that failure to address the country’s political challenges could have serious consequences for Pakistan.

His comments also highlighted the opposition’s broader demand that constitutional and democratic principles be upheld, particularly in matters involving electoral representation.

While Achakzai criticised the treatment of PTI’s mandate, he maintained that his party’s position was not driven by personal hostility towards individual political leaders or rival parties.

The opposition leader’s statement adds to the ongoing debate over the 2024 general elections, reserved seats and the broader question of public representation in Pakistan’s democratic system.
