RIYADH(The COW News Digital) Tensions between Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi-backed government forces have intensified, with the Houthis reportedly launching multiple ballistic missiles and drones toward southern Saudi Arabia.
According to Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Malki, the attacks targeted areas around Khamis Mushait, Abha and Jazan. He said there were no reports of casualties from the latest strikes.
The coalition spokesperson said Saudi-led forces would take appropriate action in response to the attacks, stressing that the coalition would continue working to protect Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, national infrastructure and civilian population.
The latest escalation comes as fighting between the Houthis and forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government has intensified in several parts of the country.
Reports of Attack on Yemeni Defense Minister’s Convoy
Meanwhile, reports have emerged of an attack and alleged encirclement of the convoy of Yemen’s Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Taher Ali, in the Dhale province.
Initial reports suggested that members of the minister’s security detail were overpowered and detained following the incident. There were also reports that the defense minister had become trapped.
However, conflicting accounts have emerged regarding whether the minister was abducted or held hostage. The circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been independently and conclusively verified.
Saudi Facilities Remain Under Threat
The Houthis have reportedly targeted energy and military-related facilities in southern Saudi Arabia in recent days, while Saudi-backed forces have continued military operations against Houthi positions inside Yemen.
The latest exchange of attacks has raised concerns that the regional security situation could deteriorate further, particularly if strikes continue to target strategic infrastructure.
Red Sea Security Concerns Grow
The renewed escalation is also raising concerns about maritime security in the Red Sea and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s key shipping corridors.
The waterway is strategically important for international trade, connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and providing a major route between Europe and Asia.
Any prolonged escalation in Yemen could increase risks for commercial shipping and further complicate the security situation across the wider region. International stakeholders are closely monitoring developments as military activity continues on multiple fronts.
