ANKARA — Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has clarified that the trilateral defense pact between Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia is not aimed at targeting Iran, emphasizing that no country will become a target unless an aggression is launched against a member state.
Addressing regional diplomatic frameworks, Fidan explained that the defense pact functions technically in a manner similar to NATO’s Article 5. Under this mutual security arrangement, an armed attack against any single member state will be considered an attack against all participating nations, ensuring collective deterrence.
Fidan further detailed the institutional framework of the alliance, revealing that it will feature a dedicated foreign ministers’ committee and a general secretariat, closely mirroring systems utilized by international alliances like NATO.
Highlighting maritime security, the Turkish Foreign Minister stressed that the safety of shipping lanes in the Red Sea is directly tied to Turkey’s national interests. He noted that Turkey should actively participate in international coalition efforts established by Saudi Arabia to protect regional maritime trade.
Additionally, Fidan hinted at the potential expansion of the alliance, stating that Egypt could soon be integrated into the defense pact once a few remaining technical matters and coordination details are successfully resolved.
