According to a report by WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned platform is currently testing a birthday reminder feature in its latest beta version for Android devices. This addition aims to eliminate the need for users to rely on external calendar applications or third-party reminders to track important dates.
Under this proposed functionality, WhatsApp will send automated notifications to users when a saved contact is celebrating a birthday. The notification system will allow individuals to open a chat directly from the alert to send immediate birthday greetings, streamlining personal interactions across the network.
In addition to direct push notifications, developers are reportedly working on a dedicated “Birthdays” section within the app interface. This centralized page will display a consolidated list of upcoming birth dates for saved contacts, offering users a single hub to manage and review important personal milestones.
However, the feature relies heavily on user data sharing. The report emphasizes that birthday reminders will only function if contacts have voluntarily added their date of birth to their WhatsApp profiles. If a contact has omitted their birthday details from their account settings, no reminders or notifications will be generated for that individual.
As the birthday reminder feature is currently in the beta testing phase, additional changes and refinements are expected before a potential worldwide rollout. WhatsApp has not yet announced an official release date for the general public, and certain interface elements may evolve based on user feedback during the testing period.
