Islamabad( The COW News Digital)The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for various parts of the country today, with Islamabad, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir likely to experience significant downpours. The wet weather system is expected to bring relief from the summer heat in several regions, but also raises the risk of urban flooding in low-lying areas.

According to the PMD, intermittent showers accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in the federal capital and surrounding regions. Upper Punjab districts, including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, and Gujranwala, are likely to see moderate to heavy rainfall. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s northern and central areas, along with parts of Azad Kashmir, are also on the radar for substantial precipitation.

In Karachi and other coastal areas of Sindh, conditions are expected to remain partly cloudy, with chances of light rain or drizzle in some localities. The PMD noted that while the monsoon activity in the south will be relatively subdued compared to the north, localized showers may occur.

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a weather advisory, urging residents to stay alert and take precautionary measures, particularly in areas prone to flooding. “Rainfall is expected across most districts of Punjab in the next 24 hours,” a PDMA spokesperson said.

Water levels at major reservoirs remain under close observation. The PDMA confirmed that water flow at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa is currently normal. Tarbela Dam has reached 96% of its capacity, while Mangla Dam stands at 62% capacity. The authorities assured that both dams are operating within safe limits.

Disaster management teams in affected provinces have been instructed to remain on standby, and rescue units are prepared to respond to emergencies. Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously, as heavy rain may reduce visibility and create slippery road conditions.

The PMD further stated that the current spell of rain is likely to continue for the next couple of days in some northern regions, after which weather patterns are expected to stabilize temporarily before the next monsoon system enters the country.

Residents are urged to monitor official updates and follow safety advisories, particularly in flood-prone districts and areas near riverbanks.
