New Zealand (The COW News Digital) Police in Auckland have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly swallowing a $19,300 diamond and gemstone-encrusted locket in a daring jewelry theft. The incident occurred in late November at a high-end jewelry store, sparking a swift response from law enforcement.

According to the BBC, the suspect allegedly consumed the locket with the intent to steal it. Officers arrived at the scene within minutes of the reported theft and apprehended the man inside the store. Despite the arrest, the stolen locket has yet to be recovered.

The locket, valued at NZ$33,585 (approximately $19,300 USD), is a unique egg-shaped piece adorned with 60 white diamonds and 15 blue sapphires. Inside, it features a tiny 18-carat gold octopus figure. The piece is known as the “Octopussy Egg,” inspired by the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy, which also revolves around the theft of a valuable egg.

The luxury jewelry brand Fabergé, which created the locket, is famous worldwide for its intricate eggs and gemstone masterpieces. Established in Russia over two centuries ago, Fabergé remains a symbol of craftsmanship and opulence.

Police reports indicate that the suspect is scheduled to appear in court on December 8. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and are seeking the recovery of the locket, which remains missing.

In addition to the locket theft, police allege that the same individual was involved in a previous series of crimes. On November 12, he reportedly stole an iPad from the same jewelry store, followed by a theft of approximately NZ$100 worth of goods from another location the following day.

The arrest has drawn widespread attention due to the unusual method of concealing the locket by swallowing it, highlighting both the audacity of the suspect and the challenges authorities face in recovering such high-value items.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the missing locket or related suspicious activity. Meanwhile, Fabergé has yet to comment publicly on the incident, although collectors and enthusiasts have expressed concern over the potential loss of this rare masterpiece.
